Toronto, Ontario July 12, 2001 In this swift, funny and Pythonesque revue by a posse of young Montrealers, an introductory lecture on Freud is constantly derailed by ludicrous demonstrations of key ideas, pun-laden songs, game-show parodies and countless jokes about sleeping with Mom. Some sequences veer toward campus-cabaret silliness, but there's great material throughout, like the showdown between Freud and Jung onstage at a comedy club, dream analysis done in the form of a doo-wop song and a scene of Oedipal conflict in which Pop tells Junior, "I bring home the bacon, so I get to fuck the prom queen." The bulb in the slide projector died right before the show I saw, but the cast covered up the disaster with some sure-handed improv and the tight script has obviously benefited from recent Fringe road-testing in Montreal and Ottawa. — Jason Anderson |
